I was on such a roll, but the days of zero fat intake and stress on the job, all excuses indeed, lead me to a relaxing cocktail with Claire last evening. And this leads me to a theory about when our bodies actually burn fat. I think it’s while we sleep.
Let’s dive into that a bit and maybe, just maybe the theory coordinates nicely with our circadian rhythm. We know from Dr. Gregor and his advice to eat more in the morning that your body tends to try and burn the calories and not store them. So when you consume alcohol in the evening it subverts the natural process which will burn the alcohol calories instead of anything else. Sleeping is our bodies natural fast, and we know that alcohol has to be burnt first, hence drinking alcohol in the evening stops the fat burn slowing or stopping weight loss. The good news is if you don’t over do it, you wont gain weight and if you’ve been good all day, not eaten fat and had some exercise, your loss efforts aren’t completely thwarted. That leads to where I am today. One day soon we’ll test this with some day drinking and fall asleep sober to see how it affects the days efforts. Science can be fun,,.. see!
On the plus side I don’t feel the stress I felt yesterday, and that could have been spiking cortisol which again is a determent to losing weight. I can’t really explain the scope of stress yesterday, but it had reached critical mass by the end of the day. Short of exercise and a hard bout of running or riding, I decided to have a couple ounces of whiskey. The result is I feel less stress today and like I’m ready to attack the diet and the day again, which may be far better than having not dealt with the stress. The accumulation of stress isn’t a good thing. Although today, I’ll get on the bike in one form or another. Maybe a lunch spin class on the stationary bike.
